Traditional Hand-Painted Signwriting

PAINTED WITH ELEGANCE AND DURABILITY

There's something a printed sign can't do. It can't carry the slight warmth of a brushstroke, the way a letter swells at its thickest point and tapers to almost nothing at the stroke's end. It can't hold a hundred small decisions — the weight of a serif, the spacing of a word, the angle of a shadow — made in real time by a person who cares about getting it right.

Hand-painted signwriting is one of the oldest commercial crafts there is. For most of the twentieth century it was the only way a business could put its name above the door, and the signwriters who did it were highly skilled, highly sought-after tradespeople. The rise of digital printing pushed the craft to the margins, but it never disappeared — and now it's back, because businesses have noticed what was lost.

At Delicious Signs, every letter is painted by hand using traditional signwriting paints and brushes: a sword liner for the fine strokes, a pencil brush for the body, a fitchew for the details. There are no shortcuts and no vinyl cut-outs hiding behind the paint. What you get is work that is genuinely, unmistakably made by a person — and people can tell the difference.

The process starts with a conversation. What are you trying to say, and to whom? What's the surface, the setting, the feeling you want the sign to give off? From there comes a design — drawn up for your approval before a drop of paint is mixed — and then the painting itself, done on-site or in the studio depending on the job.

The results are durable, distinctive, and unlike anything a printer can produce. They also age well. A good hand-painted sign doesn't date the way a digital graphic does; it weathers in, becomes part of the wall, the window, the boat. It looks like it belongs.

If you want your business to stand out for the right reasons — quality, character, craft — hand-painted signwriting is the place to start.
