Old signs are worth saving. Not just because they're beautiful — though they often are — but because they carry something that a new sign, however well made, hasn't had time to accumulate: history, familiarity, character, the particular weight of something that has been in a place for a long time and belongs there.
Restoration and renovation work at Delicious Signs covers everything from minor touch-ups (filling losses, repainting faded areas, matching original colours) to full structural restoration of signs that have been neglected, painted over, or damaged. The aim, in every case, is to return the piece to something close to its original state — or to its best possible current state — without removing what makes it worth restoring.
This kind of work requires a particular set of skills. Understanding how old paints behave. Knowing how to strip without damaging the substrate. Knowing how to match colours that have shifted with age and exposure. Understanding historical lettering styles well enough to complete a letter or word that's no longer legible. Knowing when to stabilise and consolidate rather than repaint.
Delicious Signs has carried out restoration work on Victorian pub lettering, painted timber trade signs, canal boat panels, gold-leafed glass, and a range of privately owned antique pieces. Each project begins with a proper assessment of the piece's condition and a discussion about the approach — what level of restoration is appropriate, what the client wants the end result to look like, and what is and isn't possible given the state of the original.
Restoration is also available for more recent painted work that has aged, faded, or been damaged — a shop front that needs its colours refreshing, a mural that has suffered from weathering, a hand-painted piece that has been knocked or scuffed.
