Quality Wooden Sign Construction

Promotional A-boards / sandwich boards made from quality 18mm plywood. Hand-painted in script and block letters in black, white and sky blue. With shade on some of the lettering and decorative stars.

Built to last, made to be painted

A sign is only as good as what it's painted on. The most careful lettering, the most precise gilding, the most considered colour palette — all of it is undermined by a substrate that warps, splits, or rots within a few years of installation. Getting the construction right isn't a finishing touch; it's where the work begins.

Delicious Signs produces bespoke wooden signs built for exterior use and painted finishing. That means selecting timbers and board materials that are stable, properly seasoned, and suited to the exposure they'll face. It means joinery that accounts for wood movement — the inevitable seasonal expansion and contraction that cracks paint and opens glue lines on signs that weren't made with it in mind. It means edges that are properly profiled, primed, and sealed before the first coat of paint goes on, because the edge is where water gets in and where most wooden signs fail first.

The construction side of the work matters particularly for traditional-style pub signs, hanging trade boards, fascia panels, and large flat signs that will live outside year-round. These pieces need to be built as seriously as they're painted — and in the tradition of the craft, the signwriter who paints a sign should understand how it was made and what it can take.

Wooden signs can be produced in a range of formats: flat boards routed to shape, double-sided hanging panels, shaped silhouettes, framed boards with applied mouldings, post-mounted panels, and brackets cut to specification. Timber choices range from exterior-grade MDF and marine ply for stability to solid hardwoods — oak, ash, iroko — for pieces where the material itself is part of the character.

Every wooden sign produced at Delicious Signs is prepared with the same rigour as the painting: filled, sanded, primed with the appropriate primer for the timber and the topcoat, and built up through the undercoats before any decorative work begins. The finished sign — lettered, illustrated, gilded, or some combination — is then sealed or topcoated for protection, with the finish selected for the location and the level of exposure.

Hardware — chains, rings, brackets, fixings — can be specified and supplied as part of the commission, or the sign can be delivered ready for the client to install with their own fixings.

If you need a sign that will genuinely last — that looks better in five years than it does on day one, as the paint settles and the timber weathers slightly into its surroundings — wooden construction done properly is the way to achieve it.
